It was originally conceived as part of Townshend's abandoned Lifehouseproject. Townshend described the use of the song in the proposed project as follows: "As the story unfolded,because of the vagaries of the modern world,because of pollution being caused mainly by people's need to travel,to be somewhere else. (People)had been told,'You can't do that anymore. You have to stay where you are.' But people have got this lust for life,and adventure,and a bit of color." It celebrates the joys of having a mobile home and being able to travel the highways at will – Townshend himself had acquired a mobile home about a year before the song was recorded.
この曲は本来、タウンゼントのプロジェクトである『ライフハウス』の一部として構想されていた。タウンゼントは予定されていたプロジェクトにおけるこの曲の使用法を次のように述べている。
「物語を広げるためのものだ。現代社会の予期できない変動、つまり、旅をする結果引き起こされる大気汚染のために、人々はこう言われたんだ。『もうあんなことはするな。お前達は自分の居場所に留まるべきだ。』だが人には、冒険やほんの少しの色彩のような、人生に対する欲望がある。」
この曲が讃えているものは、トレーラーハウスを持つことや、ハイウェイを気の向くままに旅できることへの喜びである。タウンゼント自身が、この曲をレコーディングする何年か前にトレーラーハウスを購入している。
