“Chairman Mao” は毛沢東（マオ・ツォートン）（1893-1976）のこと。中華人民共和国の初代国家主席。紅衛兵と呼ばれた学生運動や大衆を扇動し、伝統文化や資本主義者、少数民族を攻撃・破壊・殺害した文化大革命（1966-1976）を主導しました。実際には「革命」というより、政敵の排除を目的とした権力闘争です。政府公式の推計は発表されていませんが、40万～2000万人ほどの死者を出したとされています。また、個人崇拝の対象となったことでも知られています。
”pictures of Chairman Mao” については、『毛主席語録（英題：Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung）』のことじゃないかなーと思いました。毛沢東自身によって著され、1966年に一般向けに出版されています。1960～1970年代の世界各国の学生運動（ベトナム反戦運動など）に大きな影響を与えた書籍であり、欧米のヒッピーからは中国のカウンターカルチャーとして受け入れられたそうです。なお、『毛主席語録』には毛沢東の肖像写真が複数枚掲載されています。
