この歌詞は、おそらくボブ・マーリーが実際に銃撃された事件を示唆しています。
事件発生は、本曲のレコーディングの2ヶ月前（1976年12月3日）。ジャマイカの政治的混乱を和らげるための慈善コンサートのリハーサル中に、武装した男6人からの襲撃を受け、ボブ・マーリーは胸と腕を銃で撃たれました。しかしながら、そのわずか2日後にコンサートを敢行。銃弾を腕に残しつつ、90分におよぶパフォーマンスをやりきりました。
